Review - Henrietta Hexagon and the Triangles by Mandi Tillotson Williams‏ @MortimerCrump

Henrietta Hexagon and the Triangles (Children's Picture Book, A story for kids about adoption, family, and shapes)

Henrietta Hexagon and the Triangles by Mandi Tillotson Williams‏ is a children's book. The author offers this synopsis:

As an infant, Henrietta Hexagon was left alone in a shape sorter with no one to care for her. She was found and adopted by a family of triangles. She loves her family more than anything but she can't seem to get past the feeling that she doesn't quite fit in. One warm spring morning, Henrietta goes outside searching for hexagons. She does manage to find one but in doing so, she finds herself in a very sticky situation. She heads back home feeling down and defeated but when she arrives, everything changes!

This sweet story about adoption and family relationships also subtly teaches a valuable math lesson. Children will adore Henrietta and will also learn the important lesson that it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts.

I had my 10 year old daughter read the book and she has this to say:

Henrietta wasn't happy and has six sides. She was left alone as an infant with no one to love her. One day luckily, Ma and Pa Triangle found her. When she went home with them she had a sister and brothers to greet her. Because she wasn't a triangle, she didn't fit in with the family. Then one day, she sat next to Ma and said, "I don't fit in. I'll find some hexagons," as she ran off.

She found a bee hive, Henrietta found many hexagons in there. She fell into some honey and wacked the hive. The bees chased her. She ran to the pond. Henrietta went home wet. Everybody yelled surprise. They were smashed together as a hexagon. She was happy.

I liked the book for these reasons. She felt different but didn't feel that upset and solved her problems. Her family supported her when she felt like she was the only hexagon. Henrietta was brave and courageous about her shape. Those were the reasons why I like the book
